Castel Sant’Angelo

See and enjoy the view of Castel Sant’Angelo while you are on break and enjoy your coffee.
Castel Sant’Angelo besides being one of Rome’s most emblematic monuments has been a witness of Rome’s evolution since emperor Hadrian’s times.

Originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, the castle was intended to serve as a burial place for him and his family. However, over the centuries, it has also been used as a fortress, papal residence, and prison. During the Renaissance, the castle was transformed into a military fortress and later into a papal residence. Pope Alexander VI, for example, used it as a safe refuge and as a treasury for his wealth. A secret passage called the “Passetto di Borgo” connects Castel Sant’Angelo to the Vatican City. This corridor was constructed in the 14th century to allow popes to escape in case of imminent danger.
