Pantheon

A splendid temple in honour of all the Olympian gods was erected in the Campus Martius by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa between 27 and 25 BC. The temple therefore became known as the Pantheon, a Greek name meaning “of all the Gods”.
The Pantheon that you can admire while enjoying your coffee, preserved substantially just as it was in antiquity, is not Agrippa’s original temple, but rather the result of a complete reconstruction undertaken by Hadrian between 118 and 125 AD, the first temple having been destroyed by fire.

The most impressive feature of the Pantheon is its dome. It is the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever constructed and is said to have been such an astonishing architectural feat that the Romans of the time believed it to be the work of the gods themselves. The opening at the center of the dome, called the oculus, is the only source of natural light inside the Pantheon. It measures approximately 9 meters in diameter and symbolically connects the temple to the sky.
