The Basilica of Saint Peter is one of the most important and famous churches in the world, located in the Vatican City, an independent state within Rome, Italy. It is the mother church of the Catholic Church and one of the main tourist destinations in Rome. The Basilica was built on the site where, according to Christian tradition, the apostle Peter, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus, was buried. Construction of the basilica began in 1506 and took many years to complete. It is a masterpiece of Renaissance and Baroque architecture, designed by artists such as Michelangelo, Bernini, and Bramante.
