The Temple of Fortuna Augusta and Honorary Arches
The archaeological site of the Pompeii excavations, not far from the Gulf of Naples, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Pompeii, once a thriving Roman city, was covered by about six meters of ash and pumice during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.
The small Roman-era Temple, situated on a podium, was dedicated to the Goddess Fortuna to celebrate the victorious return of Emperor Augustus (31 BC-14 AD) from his expeditions, thus promoting the imperial family.
Curiosità
The temple’s priests would deposit a new statue in the temple with the change of each emperor. From a stele, we know that the duovir M. Tullio (a relative of Cicero) built it at his own expense on his property. The temple had political significance.
Two honorary arches, once clad in marble, close the Forum to the north. They are located on either side of the Temple of Jupiter. Today, only the one attributed to Drusus remains. The others were probably dedicated to Augustus, Tiberius, and Caligula.
