Neptune & Amphitrite Mosaic

The House of a wealthy merchant was restored after the earthquake of ’62 and was covered by the eruption of Vesuvius in ’79. It has a typical structure of Roman houses. In the lararium, marble slabs painted with the red monochrome technique, possibly by Alexander of Athens, were found. In the tablinum, there is a glass paste mosaic depicting Neptune and Amphitrite in a photographic pose. The mosaic was inserted into a previous decoration and is enclosed in a frame made of shells.

Amphitrite was the wife of Poseidon (or Neptune for the Romans) and the mother of Triton. She was one of the Nereids represented with green armor and a scepter. Neptune was the God of waters and the sea.
